Road Closure Press Release 1/23/17

From Zack Friend:

“We have seen the road drop approximately 12 inches over the past week and cracks are starting to open up along the edges of the road,” stated Assistant Director of Public Works, Steve Wiesner.  “We need to assess the safety of this road as winter weather continues to impact the area.”

In addition to the high volume of water, mud and soil saturation destabilizing the culvert and road base, underground utilities and a steep ravine contribute to the concerns of Public Works engineers about this section of roadway.

“We are looking out for the safety of our citizens by proactively limiting travel on this section of road,” continued Wiesner.  During the next few days of dry weather the County will be setting up an investigation team and conducting tests on the strength of the road area and the potential hazards of continued use.

Residents should prepare themselves by limiting travel in this area as much as possible and using the alternative travel route.  Updated road information is also available at: http://www.sccroadclosure.org/ and citizens can report problems by calling (831) 454-2160 or using the Citizen Connect app at http://www.dpw.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/ReportProblem.aspx

Drive For Schools Update for October 6

Only one week left!  The last day to turn in tickets is Friday, October 14th.

Total Tickets Sold - 2,921

Funds Raised - $12,495

Goal - $26,000

Last year we were the top elementary school in the county selling over $25,000 in tickets!  We’d like to kep that tradition going.

100% of all ticket sales go directly to Valencia.  The money we raise pays for our reading programs, it puts aides in our classrooms, it supports our garden, art, and science programs, and much, much more.  Even if you only sell 1 ticket, that $5 makes a big difference.

Need more tickets?

Contact Darcy Pruitt at 831.419.8089 (voice or text) or dkpruitt@gmail.com

Be sure to include your child's name, teacher's name, and how many ticket books you need.

There’s still time to sign up for a shift to sell at Safeway!

Check the SignUp Genius for available time slots: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/70A084FA4AC23A75-ticket

Here are the top selling classes going into the final week:

  • 1st Place - Mrs. Wise and Mr. Peters are tied at $955.00
  • 2nd Place - Mrs. Morse has $915.00
  • 3rd Place - Mrs. Matlow has $910.00
  • Mrs. Richmond, Mrs. Wing and Mrs. Silva’s classes aren’t far behind, but any class could still win.

We will have a class party for the top selling class and there are also prizes for the students who sell the most tickets.

Thank you for your generosity and keep up the great work!

Friendship Bench: Supplies Needed

Thanks to Valencia parent Katie Stanton and her Cub Scout pack #506 for working hard to fund raise for a "Friendship Bench" to be built for Valencia School.   The bench will arrive in about 2 ½ weeks.

A small committee from the 6th grade leadership team will be painting the bench.

We need the following items donated to help support our endeavors:

  • 5 or 6 paint brushes
  • paint containers/paint trays for pouring small amounts of paint
  • 1 gallon of royal blue or light blue exterior paint
  • 1 gallon of bright exterior green paint

or.....1 gallon of another brightly colored paint that matches the whale mural colors.

Please contact Ms. Christie if you have additional ideas or are able to donate any of the painting supplies to deborah_christie@pvusd.net

About The Bench:

This specially designated friendship bench will be located near the whale mural for ANY student who are newcomers or anyone looking to make new friends during lunch or recesses. A set of "starter questions" will be posted by the bench to help start dialogues with students who are looking for someone to talk to. The conversation starters will be updated periodically by the 6th grade leadership team. Students will be on the lookout for those students sitting alone on the bench and those who want to make Valencia a better place.

No Pokemon Cards at School

Trading Pokemon cards has become a distraction at Valencia.  Kids are trading with regrets and are getting distracted during transitions and class time.  Though we prefer that Pokemon cards remain at home, we understand kids use them after school with friends and playdates.  All Pokemon cards need to stay in backpacks if brought to school.

If a student has them out during school hours:

First offense:

Cards will be taken and returned to the student at the end of the day.

Second Offense:

Cards will be taken and sent to the office for pick-up at the end of the day.

Third Offense:

Parents will be contacted to pick them up.

We appreciate your support!

Volunteers Needed for Art Project: Paul Klee

paul klee.jpg

During the month of April, the Valencia Community will be learning about the great Swiss artist:

Paul Klee*

We are looking for volunteers to lead and assist in the creation of art projects.  The projects this year will be modeled after Klee’s abstract compositions with movement.

Volunteers are needed to help in each classroom who can commit to a 60 minute training session and 30 - 60 minutes in a classroom.

You do not have to be an artist to help - the curriculum is very clear and detailed.  We are all learning and working on this together. Arts is such an important creative outlet for our kids and we need you as parent volunteers to make this a fun and positive experience.

Any time you can share is greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Valencia's participation in 1st fully inclusive playground

Valencia Potts Family.jpg

Back in October 2015 Ms. Wagenhoffer and Ms. Rasmussen's classes participated in an inclusive playground workshop, along with other participants from other organizations who have been involved with the fundraising efforts for LEO's Haven.  LEO's Haven will be Santa Cruz County's first fully inclusive playground to be built within the parks' system.  LEO's Haven will be located in Chanticleer Park which is in the Live Oak neighborhood of Santa Cruz.

The efforts to fund LEO's Haven are a public/private partnership between the county, a non-profit called Shane's Inspiration, and a local volunteer group headed by my family.  Custom designed by Shane's Inspiration's architect, this playground has features for children from 0-12 and will accommodate a variety of special needs such as autism, sensory processing disorders, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and down syndrome. We are months away to a public reveal of the plans for LEO's Haven.

There are several ways in which to be involved with the fundraising for LEO's Haven.

We are participating in the May 7th Human Race sponsored by the Volunteer Center.  Folks who are interested in participating in the 5 mile walkathon can sign up here:

https://humanracesc.org/npo/leos-haven

We have a goal of raising $10,000 that day and already we are halfway there!  Help us make it across the finish line!

The Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Club has designed LEO's Haven their charity beneficiary for their Firecracker 10K on July 4th.

https://www.santacruzfirecracker10k.org

Come for the Thrill.  Run for the Cause.  Stay for the Party!
Registration is now open.

Visit our website, santacruzplaygroundproject.org, or follow us on Facebook, Santa Cruz Playground Project, for the latest news.  You can also sign up for our e-newsletter via our Facebook page.

Thank you Valencia for your interest in making play inclusive for our children in Santa Cruz County!

Valencia School Safety Plan – Parent Input Meeting

At Valencia, the safety of our students is a top priority.  As El Nino weather hit our area this year with resulting power outages, it has given us an opportunity to review and update our School-wide Emergency Safety Plan with a critical eye, to ensure that there are plans in place for multiple emergency scenarios.  We welcome parent input in this process and would like to invite you to a meeting on Wednesday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m. in the library.  The staff and I would like the opportunity to share our Safety Plan with parents and welcome your follow-up questions and suggestions.

Please do not hesitate to contact me in the meantime with any questions or concerns.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you,

Kyle Griffith, Principal

Valencia School’s Student of the Year for 2015-2016

Haley Elizabeth Ortega has been named Valencia School’s Student of the Year for 2015-2016:

Haley is a very positive and upbeat person. Her attitude and demeanor are respectful and kind. She is also quite a capable athlete and competitor. She frequently talks about her competition with herself and goals she sets for herself...from running time, to basketball or soccer skills, to math and reading. When she needs help or has a question, she's quick and persistent with efforts to get what she needs.

She's an "on task" and engaged learner who strives for improvement, even in the face of challenges. She acknowledges her areas of strength as well as her areas of development. Instead of wondering why something is difficult, she makes a plan for how she can be successful with it.

Haley is thoughtful and observant. She is a friend to others, but does have expectations of how others should treat her. She exudes genuine confidence and self assurance and this helps others feel secure when relating to her. She also strives to build others up and encourage their successes.

Haley is an honest person who communicates/demonstrates a basic an understanding of what is right and wrong, both for herself and for decisions made for "the whole".

In a nutshell, Haley really embodies our Valencia Values of Kindness, Best effort, responsibility and respect. It should also be mentioned that she has "grit and perseverance".

  • SPIRIT DAY is next Friday, Feb. 5th. Think "SOUP"-er Bowl Sports Day! Children can wear their favorite NFL team gear or colors, not just for the two teams that will be playing the Superbowl. If football is not your thing, wear sports gear of your choice.
    • We would also like all students to bring at least one can of soup for the Second Harvest Food Bank on Spirit Day.
    • An entertainer will be on campus to either face paint or make a balloon twister for your student. Sign-up NOW, space is limited! Bring a check for $4 made payable to Home and School Club to your student's teacher to be placed on the signup sheet. Proceeds will benefit the 3rd grade level.

Let's all show our school spirit, and let's all show that Valencia is truly a Caring Community.

On Wednesday, January 27 at 4pm in the library there will be a special meeting of Valencia's Site Council and Pajaro Valley Unified School District representatives to discuss some of the Valencia projects that will be implemented using the remaining Measure L Bond funds approved November 2012.  Over the last several years, Site Council has identified Valencia priorities utilizing input from parents, teachers, and staff along with District assessments.  We are gathering Wednesday to hear from the District and its architects which will enable us to finalize the priorities for our school.  It is an open meeting and we welcome your attendance.

Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Spring Auction

We are looking for volunteers to join our Auction Committee!  Even if you have just a little time, don't think that you can't be of help; we have jobs that require various commitments. Even if you think we cannot use your particular talents, try us! Even if you're new to the school, we can show you the ropes!

Planning is under way and there are lots of things to do. Our next committee meeting is
November 30th at 8:30 AM. Please contact Lydia Habr if you are interested in checking out the meeting or able to help in any capacity at
lydiahabr@mac.com or
408-892-1690.

Here's some of a few things we need:

  • Internal Solicitations (a few people to get other parents thinking about what they might donate)
  • External Solicitations (we need people to go after donations from businesses in the community)
  • Class Offerings (work with the teachers and class reps to get something together, be it an art project or a party, a themed basket)
  • Class auction liaison (be the person in your class to manage the flow of info to the parents)
  • Data entry for auction software
  • Printing and stuffing folders
  • Decorating/party planning (we will need to execute the theme at the location, and plan the layout, signage, etc)

Dads, Male Teachers -- We Need You!

Volunteer Coaches Needed for Young Tritons Running Club (Mini Mermaid Running Club's New Program for Boys)

As many of you know, this will be MMRC's third year at Valencia. Each year, a few parents ask why there isn't a program for boys. We are so excited to announce that MMRC's new BOYS program is ready to go! Young Tritons Running Club inspires every boy to become emotionally and physically balanced through self-compassion, empathy, cooperation, a broadened definition of strength and discovering the finish line is just the beginning. The organization is entirely volunteer based, so in order to bring this exciting new program to Valencia we need dedicated, enthusiastic males to lead the charge! The bad news: this year we will be unable to bring the program to Valencia unless we hear from volunteer coaches very soon. The good news: there is always next year and this a brand new program, so we are just getting started. For more information, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/Young-Tritons-Running-Club-688726314596404/?fref=ts

Please email
Coach Michelle at beckstromgaon@yahoo.com with any questions.

Drive for Schools - So close to our goal!

Dear Valencia Families,

Friday was Valencia's last day to turn in Drive for Schools tickets. We had a BIG collection ($5,295)!!

Our official count through Friday is $24,240. Just $760 short of our $25,000 goal.

We have never reached our goal before. The only time we've been this close was in 2009 when we sold $24,326 in tickets.

A few of us are selling tickets at the Aptos Safeway on Sunday afternoon from 3-5 pm. If we sell tickets at our usual pace, we'll easily beat our 2009 total, but I doubt we'll make it to $25,000 without a little extra help.

I'll have lots of tickets at the Aptos Safeway. Can you come out and buy a few more? I'll match you book for book up to a total of $200. That should get us across the line.

Please get the word out...or stop by yourself and buy a few extras. Let's get this done.

Go Seastars!!

UPDATE: Drive for Schools

Valencia's DRIVE FOR SCHOOLS fundraiser is off to a slow start again this year.  With just two weeks to go we've raised $5,455 and are only 20% of the way to our $25,000 goal.

A few students are off to an amazing start, selling more than $200 worth of tickets each. But to reach our goal we need every student's best effort. Please help your child sell his/her Drive for Schools tickets to family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues at work.

The money we raise pays for computer equipment, reading, garden, art, and science programs that benefit all of our children. Let's make our goal this year.

Go Seastars!

Volunteers Needed in "Parent Green Committee"
A HUGE thank you to the whole Valencia community that supported the continuation and expansion of our garden, green, sustainable programs. We are thrilled to report that garden/green/sustainable activities are scheduled for each grade level and have already begun this week! Our larger school plan is to focus on obtaining the coveted Department of Education "Green Ribbon School Award." Here is a link to more information on this:http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/fa/sf/greenribbonprog.asp.

Mrs. Richmond is in need of some parent volunteer support to help breakdown the pillars in the award to actual school specific projects that we can work on implementing. The pillars are essentially as follows 1) reducing environmental impact 2) increasing student/staff health and wellness and 3) increasing environmental education. In order to obtain the award we will also be in need of additional funding and parent support is requested for seeking out and helping apply for any available grant funding.

If you are interested in helping we'd like to form a "parent green committee" to work on these specialized goals this school year. We would meet 1 x a month with Mrs. Richmond to focus in on these goals and the growth & support of the Valencia garden/green/sustainable programs. Please e-mail Mrs. Richmond if you are interested in volunteering and if there is a specific "pillar" you want to work on let her know that as well:karen_richmond@pvusd.net

Drive for Schools Fundraiser

START YOUR ENGINES AND...
SELL, SELL, SELL!

The Drive for Schools Fundraiser has begun!

The Drive for Schools begins this week and runs through October 16th. This month long event is Valencia's biggest fundraiser of the year. Each ticket we sell is a chance to win great prizes like a Toyota Prius or Subaru Outback or $25,000 in cash and other prizes. See the growing prize list here: http://beachboardwalk.com/driveforschools/prizes.html

Yesterday, every student received two books of six tickets to start the drive. Tickets sell for $5 each or six tickets for $25. Students can request more tickets by filling out a slip and returning it to their classroom's Drive for Schools envelope. If we sell all of our tickets we will reach our goal of $25,000.

The best thing about this fundraiser is we get to keep every single dollar our student's raise through ticket sales. These dollars support educational programs at Valencia and our students gain valuable communication and community outreach skills through their marketing efforts.

Day 1: (September 17)
DRIVE FOR SCHOOLS ticket envelopes go home with students.
• Students should write their first and last name on their envelope.

Daily (September 18 –October 16)
• Students sell tickets, collect money and keep the completed ticket stubs (the small end).
• Completed envelopes (with money and ticket stubs) are collected in class each morning.
• Teachers turn in completed envelopes to the office with morning attendance.
• You can request more tickets on your envelope or pick them up at the school office.

Last Day: (October 16)
• Students must turn in money and completed ticket stubs by 2:00 pm on October 16th.

Important Notes:
• The sooner students turn in their tickets the better chance they have to win the weekly drawing.
• There are grand prizes for top “individual” and “class” ticket sellers.
• There are “full participation” classroom parties and teacher incentives to win.

• There will be a Valencia Celebration Day once we hit
our $25,000 goal.

Don't forget to sell tickets to your out of town friends and relatives who'd like a chance to win a brand new car or $25,000 in cash and other great prizes.

Valencia has been one of the top selling schools for the past five years. We'd like to keep that tradition going. If you have questions (or suggestions) about how you can help with Valencia's Drive for Schools please email at dkpruitt@gmail.com or text at (831) 419.8089 Darcy Pruitt.

VALENCIA BENEFIT AUCTION 2015

Get your dancing shoes ready because the DAY has come!

The Valencia Auction is the school’s largest and most exciting fundraising event. This event raises funds to help maintain, supplement or in some cases, provide essential school programs like art, reading programs (RTI), materials and resources, computers and physical education- in order to support our teachers and enhance the educational experience of our children.

The Auction continues to be a successful fundraiser because of the involvement and generosity of parents like you.

Alex Gaon Nominated for Student of the Year

Alex Gaon, a 6th grader at our school, has been nominated as Student of the Year by the teachers at Valencia School. Throughout the grades, she has shown dedication to her learning, demonstrated the Valencia Values of respect, responsibility, kindness, and personal best effort every single day. She asserts her thoughts, ideas, questions, and concerns in our class meetings. Alex goes above and beyond in the work she is asked to do, showing exceptional products, whether it is in writing, reading, math, art, science, social studies, and more. She is a person others can rely on for comfort in times of need, support in academic pursuits, leadership qualities in team work activities. We learn a lot from Alex each day; she is a strong, effective role model for students, teachers, and parents. We wish her well as she will soon be graduating and moving on to the "bigger world" of junior high school.

Thank you Alex for being you!

Spirit Day - Twins Day and Kindness letter, posters and/or cards

SPIRIT/SERVICE  DAY - Friday, Feb. 27th!  It's TWINS DAY (or any number of multiples) - coordinate clothes, shoes, hair, hats, etc. with a buddy or two or more.

In addition, students are asked to create kindness cards/posters for the elderly living in our local community.  Cards/posters can be made at home (paper available from teachers) or school.  We are hopeful that each student will make at least two cards/posters, etc. to coordinate with the TWIN/Doubles theme.  Simple statements: Someone is thinking of you...I wish you a nice day...I hope you are well...would be a once addition to the cards, along with a nice, cheerful picture.

Physics and Chemistry Fun with Irvin!

Back by popular demand, a new after school enrichment program!

Physics and Chemistry Fun with Irvin!

There's a new special opportunity for Valencia students to learn advanced concepts in science. The popular Classroom Science Fun program of the local nonprofit Outdoor Science Exploration is coming back to Valencia. These classes specialize in active learning, hands on, advanced physics and chemistry activities adapted just for elementary kids. Understanding these concepts offer many clear and long term benefits especially when natural curiosity is abundant and success is important. Each year this 18 year old nonprofit teaches more than 180 nearby classes.

We'll meet at Valencia right after school on 7 Wednesdays starting next week February 25. There is space for 24 kids, and the instructor is Irvin Lindsey. He can be reached at info@osefun.com. Valencia flyer attached. Website: http://osefun.com

There is a correction. The flyer says classes meet on Fridays but it's really on Wednesdays.

SOUP-er Bowl SPIRIT DAY next Friday, Jan. 30th.

SPIRIT DAY next Friday, Jan. 30th. Think "SOUP"-er Bowl! Children can wear their favorite NFL team gear or colors, not just for the two teams that will be playing the Superbowl. If football is not your thing, wear sports gear of your choice.

Volunteer Procedure for the Visual and Performing Arts programs

As you may already know, our district received a grant to hire some teachers in the area of Visual and Performing Arts for the lower grades. These teachers will provide instruction to primary grade students while at the same time providing some release time for classroom teachers to do their planning for Common Core Standards.  The teacher at Valencia is a specialist in creative movement and drama.  She will focus on creative movement at the beginning of the school year with more emphasis on drama later on.  She welcomes parent support and participation in her program.

Any parent support to the Visual and Performing Arts programs need to be fingerprinted and cleared before helping.  Please pick up the necessary forms in the office.

Halloween Costume Guidelines for Oct 31st

This year, for the first time in a long time, students will be able to wear their Halloween costumes to school on Oct. 31st.  Since the students will be very excited that day we ask that you make sure that your child follows our costume rules for that day:

• Do not bring any weapons or sharp objects as part of the costume
• No masks allowed
• Do not bring any special or precious objects that may get lost or damaged during the school day
• Children need to make sure they have all the parts of their costume before leaving to go home at the end of the school day

All students (and parents) are also encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes at the Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 25th from 2:00 – 5:00 here at Valencia School

Safety News

On Tuesday we were notified by the fire department that the company replacing the water main on Trout Gulch had hit a gas line.  We were asked to put in place a protocol called “Shelter in Place” as a precautionary measure - which means that students remain inside classrooms continuing with class activities until the situation is deemed resolved.  Our teachers and students handled the protocol calmly, because we have practiced it many times.  In the meantime, the Fire Chief and PG&E quickly determined that the school was in no danger.  We had several members of the fire department here just to assure that the situation did not change.  We were able to lift the shelter in place within about 45 minutes.

I have been asked why I did not notify parents during the situation with our electronic messenger system.  It is important that you understand what happens when we use this system during the school day; upon seeing the school’s number on their phones, many parents call us without listening to the message.  This causes a cascade (imagine 400 parents calling our office at once)  of calls that disrupt the important procedures the office handles during the situation.  We would only use that system during the school day in a true emergency.  In that case, parents would be given directions about how to procede and a number to call for updates or check the website for further instructions.  Please understand that we are doing our best to handle each situation and always have the student’s safety as our utmost priority.

I could have used the system later in the day, after the office was closed to give you a rundown of the day – and I will do that in the future in such a situation. The best way you can help to keep your children safe is to keep your emergency phone numbers and email addresses current at the office so that, if it is every necessary, you will receive the updates in a timely fashion.

If you have questions about safety procedures, please visit our website and click on Safety Plan under the heading “Our School.”  You can also email me at kelley_didion@pvusd.net.

Together for students,

Drive for Schools Fundraiser!

START YOUR ENGINES AND...
SELL, SELL, SELL!
The Drive for Schools Fundraiser has begun!

The Drive for Schools begins this week and runs through October 19th. This month long event is Valencia's biggest fundraiser of the year. Each ticket we sell is a chance to win great prizes like a 2015 Toyota Prius, Subaru Outback, $25,000 in cash and other prizes. See the growing prize list here: http://beachboardwalk.com/driveforschools/prizes.html

Every student will receive two books of six tickets to start the drive.

We will hold a weekly drawing as an incentive to students selling their tickets.
Students can win:
- gift certificates and other prizes

Classrooms with full participation can win:
- an awesome class celebration
- top individual classroom sales award (at each grade level)

If we reach our goal of $25K we will all win:
- a school-wide team sales award

We have a SignUp Genius for opportunities to sell tickets at public places around Aptos. Don't forget to sell tickets to your out of town friends and relatives who'd like a chance to win a brand new car, $25,000 in cash and other great prizes.

Construction Delays on Trout Gulch Rd. starting Sept. 22nd

Trout Gulch Mutual Water Company will be starting construction on a water main replacement project on this coming MONDAY, SEPT 22 from Valencia to Trout Gulch Road between 8:30 and 5:30 PM until further notice.

We are told to expect 30 minute delays along this route, and it is recommended that those who live on the Valencia side use the south route to Freedom Blvd.  We know this will create pick-up delays for our buses which may result in later drop offs if your child rides the bus.  Our district transportation department has been notified and is planning alternate routes, etc.

Fortunately, the work starts later in the morning than we do, so there will not be an impact on the morning drop off.  However, pick up will be more difficult.  We ask that if you pick up your child from school, that you plan accordingly in order to be on time.  Our teachers have to supervise your children until you arrive, and when you are late it cuts into their valuable planning time.

Thank you for taking the time to plan ahead for this inconvenience and, as always, thank you for your support!

Attention Valencia Volunteers

All Volunteers Must Be TB tested and Fingerprinted

All volunteers (including drivers for field trips) are required to be fingerprinted and tested for TB. This is a new safety measure the District implemented last year. If you plan to volunteer at Valencia, and have already been through the process, you simply fill out and turn in the volunteer form in the office stating - cleared in 2013-14.

Otherwise, if a family is new to Valencia, they will need to do the following:

  • Fill out the volunteer form in the office and turn in to have Principal Didion sign it, then
  • Test for TB and take the results of the test to the District office during fingerprinting hours. Please call 831-786-2145 to confirm hours.

When you arrive to Human Resources to be fingerprinted you must bring an acceptable photo ID (such as driver's license) and TB clearance. HR will not fingerprint volunteers without proper identification and TB clearance. This will be valid within the PVUSD district for a period of four years, but is not valid outside of our District.

If you have any questions, please contact our school office at 831-688-2013.

Classroom Management:

Classroom Rules:

  1. Treat others like you want to be treated. (Respect them and their things).
  2. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  3. Listen when it’s other’s turn to talk.

Consequences:

  1. Verbal warning
  2. Lose fun activity
  3. Fill out Reflection form (parent signs it and student returns next day).
  4. Call parents
  5. Principal’s office

Positive Rewards:

  1. Lots of positive attention!
  2. “Caught Being Good” tickets, exchanged for prizes at end-of-the-month class auction.
  3. Team points. When a team gets 20 points, they get microwave popcorn or crackers.

Other Rules:

Bathroom use: Students are allowed to use the bathroom whenever they need to. However, if a student decides to use the bathroom during class time, they lose 5 minutes from a fun activity. This is because they have ample time to use the bathroom when they are not in class, such as before school, during the 2 recesses, after school, or while in transition from RTI, Science, Social Science, P.E., or Writing class.  Water: students are allowed and encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to sip on during class.  They may bring water, but not any other liquid, as those are difficult to clean if they spill.  Transition time tardy: if students take more than 3 minutes while in transition between periods, they get a detention slip, just like at our district’s middle schools. (They lose a fun activity, or get extra homework).

Homework:

We have homework every day except for Friday. We usually have math (a page in the workbook), ELD (a page in the weekly Wordly Wise packet), and reading (30 minutes, fill out a portion of the Reading Log, whole log is due each Friday) every day. Occasionally we have social science, writing, or science homework. Every day the students write the required homework in their Binder Reminders notebook, and I sign it to make sure they copy it correctly. Every morning, homework is checked and if a student doesn’t finish, or forgets it, then they have to miss out on a fun activity to finish their work.

Thank you, and looking forward to a great year!

21 Day Kindness Challenge letter

21 Day Kindness Challenge letter

Dear Teachers, Parents, Students,

The 6th grade student leadership and Valencia School Student Council is excited to announce our 21 Day Kindness Challenge coming up right after Spring Break, on Tuesday, April 22nd.  We will have a kick off assembly at 1:40 on Tuesday in front of the whale mural.  Student council and 6th grade leadership will speak to staff and students about our 21 Day Kindness Challenge.

This challenge will be asked of every student, teacher, staff member and hopefully even parents of our Valencia School Community.  It is our goal to reach 70,000 acts of kindness by the 21st day.  The challenge will begin on April 23rd and run through Wednesday, May 21st.  (we are not counting weekend days)

Please help us achieve our goal by encouraging all members of the Valencia School community to participate and write down their “Spotted A Kind Act” card or cards for an act of kindness that they WITNESSED each day.

Every classroom will make an Acts of Kindness Box and receive a stack of SPOTTED A KIND ACT cards.  When you and your students eye witness an Act of Kindness, they are to fill out a “Spotted A Kind Act” card and put it in ANY box on campus.  A student from student council and/or 6th grade leadership will collect the cards weekly from their homeroom.

Teachers and Parents:  Please help us achieve our goal by encouraging your children and helping them brainstorm ideas for acts of kindness that they can do on campus.  Thank you so much for your support!

We are looking for volunteers to help make “Acts of Kindness” shoeboxes for the library, science class, the office, staff room, cafeteria, Ms. Riddick’s room, and the speech office.  If you have a shoebox that you can decorate and make a space for slips of paper to go inside, please bring your volunteer donation of time and resources to room 9, Ms. Christie.

With kindness,
6th Grade Leadership and Valencia School Student Council
If you have any question, please email Ms. Christie at Deborah_christie@pvusd.net

Valencia Recieves California Distinguished School Invitation!

Last week some very exciting news came to Valencia that really affirms the work we have been doing in reading.  We are the only school in Santa Cruz county to be invited to apply for the California Distinguished School award this year;  Valencia first earned this distinction in 2006.  Every five years schools have the opportunity to become eligible to renew the award.  We are eligible this year, because our dedicated faculty collaborate to improve their instructional practice and look for ways to meet the needs of all of their students – they are the most dedicated staff with which I have ever worked in 25 years.  It is also important to recognize our Home and School Club Board and Site Council who have been tireless supporters and invested financially in the reading program we have designed.  The application for this year is due in December, and we will be visited in the spring by a state team who will then make the decision.   Please join me in congratulating the Valencia faculty, staff, students, and Parent leadership on this incredible accomplishment.  Go Sea Stars!

Valencia Shifting to National Common Core Standards in Math

You may have read in the newspaper that the students will not have the California State tests this year in grades 2-12 in order for schools to begin to implement the state’s adoption of the National Common Core Standards.  The only exceptions are our 5th graders who will still take a state test in science.  We are proud of the work we have done already to implement the new California Common Core State Standards (CCCS) in English Language Arts.  Our big challenge now, and one that you will definitely notice, is the shift to the CCSS in mathematics.  You can learn more about the math standards by following this link: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/   As our teachers are learning not only the shifts in content (deeper thinking about math including teaching students how to solve problems in multiple ways and explain their thinking) – the new standards ask them to learn new teaching strategies as well.  Homework may look a little different, and we ask you to trust that we are doing our best to bring you what promises to be a much more rigorous math experience that promotes thinking versus memorization.

Watch for news on a parent education night for the new standards to come in January.  In the meantime, open the attachment below entitled: Common Core Shifts for Parents - it is a great introduction!

Drive for Valencia Begins September 19th
Look for your Valencia fundraiser flyer and tickets coming home to you starting Thursday, Sept. 19th. Our teachers will get your packets home to you as soon as they can - check those backpacks and folders! You can help them reach out to friends and family. Each ticket sold brings $5 to the school. You will have between September 18th and October 20th to sell the tickets. If your child sells all of the tickets, we have plenty more at the office.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the Capitola Auto Mall Dealer Group provide the opportunity for us to sell tickets for which the Grand Prize winner will have the opportunity to choose between three exciting options--the choice of a brand new Toyota Prius of Subaru Outback, including tax, title, and license, or $25,000 in cash. Additionally there will be over 100 other prizes.

There is no cost for the school and this has become one of our biggest fundraisers. Help us reach our goal for this year of raising $25K for Valencia.

Thanks in advance for your participation!
If you have questions, please contact Aimee Escalante.

Learning is Fun!

We have been working hard and doing some fun activities so far this year! Kindergartners have been working on name writing, letters in our names, counting and writing numbers to 30, along with cutting and gluing practice. First graders have been working on letter writing, letter sound practice, beginning sentence writing, writing and counting to 30 and beyond, as well as counting practice by 5’s and 10’s. We’ve also been exploring astronauts through books, writing and art projects. Both grade levels have also been reviewing AB and ABC patterns, graphing, poetry, songs and lots of art. We also got to meet our big buddies from Mrs. Wagenhoffer’s 4th grade class last week! We will get together with them every other week.

All Valencia Volunteers Must Be Fingerprinted

All volunteers (including drivers for field trips) must now be fingerprinted and tested for TB. This is a new safety measure being implemented by the District. If you plan to volunteer at Valencia, we need you to fill out the form and return it to the office as soon as possible. This will be good within the PVUSD district for a period of four years, but is not valid outside of our District. If you have any questions, please contact our school office at (831) 688-2013.

New Onsite After School Care at Valencia - Register Today

Valencia is working with Campus Kids Connection (CKC), a non-profit child care provider,  to bring extended child care services to Valencia for K-6 grades.  CKC already provides this program at 7 school sites in the Santa Cruz City and Soquel school districts.

The program begins on the first day of school: AUGUST 19th, 2013.

Campus Kids Connection, Inc.  at Valencia Elementary is a program that is staffed for group child care with a ratio of one teacher up to fourteen children. We have monthly themes to plan our activities. We have more structured activities that we call "clubs". Some of our clubs that are regularly offered are science, cooking, modern art, sculpture, dinosaurs, space, nature explorers, dance, drama, sewing, inventions and outdoor games. The children will also be served an afternoon snack. A general outline of the daily routine is as follows: student check-in, group meeting, snack, homework time, self-directed play inside and outside, and clubs. Schedules can be made for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days a week. Our tuition rates depend on how many days your family needs care for.

You can change your schedule at any time during the school year, with 2 weeks’ notice for tuition to change. Families may also utilize our drop-in care ($30/$35 per day), with 24 hours notice.  Families may choose a 3pm pick up rate or a 6pm (closing) pick up rate. There is also a two-step sliding scale depending on family size and gross monthly income. Registration takes place in the administration office located at 820 Bay Ave, suite 109, in Capitola, CA.

An enrollment packet needs to be completed prior to the first day of care and a non-refundable $55.00 registration fee and first month’s tuition is due at the time of registration. Enrollment packets are available at the Administration Office or online at www.campuskidsconnection.com.

Docent Training

Valencia Docent Program

Valencia School will learn all about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's life and work during the month of April. We will also create our own still life masterpieces using oil pastels.

Volunteers are needed to help in each classroom (a minimum of 2 people per class - a maximum of 6) who can commit to a 60 minute training session and 90 minutes in the classroom.

THE TRAINING SESSIONS WILL BE HELD IN THE LIBRARY ON THE FOLLOWING DATES/TIMES (Choose a time that works in your schedule -- you only need to attend ONE session):

Wednesday morning - April 10, 2013 at 8:15 am

OR

Thursday evening - April 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm

You do not have to be an artist to help - the curriculum is very clear and detailed and there will be DVDs to help you. We are all learning and working on this together!  If you are an artist, this will be simple!  Regardless, it will be fun!!

Sign up for more than one grade or class if you wish, but any time you can share is greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Valencia 6th Grader Places 3rd in County Spelling Bee!

Addie B. won 3rd place in the Santa Cruz County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 23.  It was very exciting because three kids tied for third place, and they had to do a “spell-off” to find the winner. The deciding word was “rhetoric.” One of the very tough words of the day, which stumped most of the parents, was “eczema” (no “x”!). “Delicatessen” and “goulash” were also doozies. Way to go, Addie!

6th Grade Student of the Year to be Honored

Valencia Elementary is proud to announce sixth grader Elijah G. as Valencia Student of the Year.  Elijah will be honored before the PVUSD Board of Trustees on February 27.  For the first time this year, sixth grade students chose the honoree themselves.  They nominated classmates that best represented our Valencia Values: Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Best Effort.  Finalists included Addie B., Ryder B., William C., Mia C, Bryce E., Evan M., Matthew M., Gabi T., and Lauren W.

Elijah is an outstanding student and scholar who loves reading, drawing, and playing baseball and other sports.  In third grade he started a community service project to raise money for Haiti after the earthquake.  In fifth grade, he donated stickers to the 6th Grade Caring Community that he'd made with some of his own money: "Valencia Caring Community, One Community One World."   The Caring Community then sold them and used the money to send to help build schools for girls and boys  in Afghanistan.
He has served in Student Leadership since 2nd grade, and this year he is Secretary of the Valencia Student Council.  He is a member of our school's Green Team and the Safety Team.  One of his former teachers, Mrs. Wise remarked, "Elijah showed amazing leadership in class,  and I often told him it wouldn't surprise me if he became President of the United States some day."  Mrs. Christie wrote, "Elijah was ready and willing to volunteer to partner up with students who felt left out and excluded when partnership teams formed.  He was a leader during class meetings, showed great empathy and compassion when speaking, and was always on task, trying his personal best.  He is a good friend to all."
Elijah has been chosen to be a student ambassador with People to People. People to People was started by Dwight D. Eisenhower who once said, "I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments."  Elijah will be joining People to People on "A Tale of Two Cities" and will be traveling to England and France for 14 days this summer. He is one of 10 5th and 6th graders chosen for the greater Monterey Bay Area - from King City to Santa Cruz. He will be joining 30 kids from the greater San Jose area to make up the Northern California Delegation. They will be also meeting up with other kids from the US to experience this journey together.

A Message from Ms. Didion

Dear Valencia Families,

I'm sure that, like me, you are struggling with the horrific, senseless tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut on Friday.  As more information is given, I am deeply moved by the bravery of the staff and students at the school that day.  My heart is breaking for the parents whose children died - and for the families of the staff who gave their lives.  I am also painfully aware of how little control we have over such an event... so many security measures were in place there and the teachers and support staff did everything they could have done.

At their December meeting, our Valencia Site Council updated and approved our annual school safety plan which includes procedures for all kinds of emergencies.  Plans for our January teacher professional development days include review of the plan.  In addition, thanks to a generous community member,  we will all be updating our CPR certification.  My greatest comfort, however, is knowing without question that, like the staff at Sandy Hook,  every member of the Valencia staff  would put their own lives at risk in an instant to keep your children safe.

Because we can't prepare for, control, or even imagine events that may happen, we have to count on and trust one another to deal with any situation that we may encounter as a community.  Limit your children’s exposure to the news, but talk honestly with them, and reassure them, as we will, that they will be safe at school.  Thank you for the safety efforts you make on behalf of all of our children and for supporting the Valencia staff by following our procedures especially signing in and out at the office.

The best way I know to remember the children and adults that lost their lives on Friday, is to hold your children close.  During this winter break, make every moment precious, and have a wonderful, safe holiday.

Together for Valencia,

Kelley Didion

Harvest Festival Thanks!

Harvest Festival a Success!

A great time was had by all on Saturday at our annual Harvest Festival.  There was an amazing turnout of students, parents and teachers to share the day with each other enjoying fabulous food, exciting games and attractions and a frightful Halloween scare for those who braved the Haunted House.  Madame Kuku predicted a bright future for all and this must be due to the wonderful community and support we give each other as Seastars!  Digital photos will be available soon from the photo booth for anyone that needs another copy.  A million thanks to everyone that helped make this event possible - it wouldn't be possible without your time, donations and support.

From the Harvest Festival Team,

Teacher Leaders to Attend California Green Schools Summit

Mrs. Richmond (k), Mr, Peters (5-6), and Ms. Didion (principal) will be attending the California Green Schools Summit September 27 and 28 in Pasadena.  They will learn how to engage our students in hands-on projects that go beyond the classroom and reduce our school’s environmental footprint. Just some of the things they will learn about:   Eco-Schools USA and Green Schools Initiative will share their “7 Steps” framework, including Green Teams and audit tools, to help students take actions along various environmental pathways (water, energy, waste, climate, and more). Action projects enable students to apply their classroom learning to solve “real world” problems on their school campus and in their community using science, math, technology, art, and design. These programs help teach stewardship, save your school money, and align with the new Green Ribbon Schools award and recognition as an “eco-school.”

They will also learn the new comprehensive definition of a “green” school used by the U.S. Department of Education: green facilities, green operations, and green curricula; the “7 steps to a green- or eco-school” approach; how to do environmental audits with students of all ages, integrating math, science, technology and design skills; successful student action projects that reduce a school’s energy & water use, waste, and promote outdoor learning; how Green Teams help to create a school sustainability culture and involve the school community and existing audit tools and lesson plans so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.  To learn more about the summit you can visit the website at www.greenschoolssummit.com.

Message from Ms. Didion about head lice

Valencia Families,                                                                 March 8, 2012

Recent cases of lice have caused concern, and I want to clarify our school and district policy.  Per the superintendent’s office we are a “NO NITS” school.  Students who have been identified to have head lice will be sent home immediately for treatment and will be excluded until subsequent inspection shows no lice or nits are present in the hair, AND parents complete and return the lice treatment form. (attached to this email and available on our website.)  We also send home detailed instructions on treating the lice and parents must bring the shampoo product box to school with them to have their child readmitted.

With all of these procedures, we still have to rely on parents to report cases of head liceand then, if they receive a notice to monitor their own child’s head according to the instructions in the letter.  Please talk with your student about ways to “head off” head lice.

Please also remember that every day we are doing the best we can at Valencia with limited staff.  Please treat our wonderful office staff and health assistant with respect.  We all have to work together to get through the common yearly lice outbreak.

Kelley Didion, Principal

Heading Off Head Lice

  • Teach children to avoid head-to-head contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playgrounds, slumber parties, and camps).
  • Teach children not to share clothing and supplies, such as hats, scarves, helmets, sports uniforms, towels, combs, brushes, bandanas, hair ties, and headphones.
  • Disinfest combs and brushes used by a person with head lice by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.
  • Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with a person with head lice.
  • Clean items that have been in contact with the head of a person with lice in the 48 hours before treatment. Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items using hot water (130°F) and a high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag and stored for two weeks.
  • Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the person with lice sat or lay. Head lice survive less than one or two days if they fall off the scalp and cannot feed.
  • Do not use insecticide sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
  • After finishing treatment with lice medication, check everyone in your family for lice after one week. If live lice are found, contact your health care professional.

Visual Arts News!

During the month of January, we will be piloting a second arts program, focusing on the art of Vincent Van Gogh through the well respected “Meet the Masters” curriculum.  Students will learn about Van Gogh’s life, what inspired him and what makes his work so remarkable and unique.  Students, faculty, staff and volunteers will learn specific techniques and then use them in a school-wide art project.  All grades, all classes will be creating art together!  The beauty of this program is you do not necessarily need to be an artist to help!

Here’s a five minute overview of the “Meet the Masters” program:

Please stay tuned to learn how WE can help make art thrive at Valencia!  For more information or to sign up to be a Valencia Docent, contact Gigi Kelbert at gigi [at] baymoon.com.
